Graphic Design entails branding, web design, package design, and other creative profiles. We all know that designers work with clients to design and create things we have never seen before or have a unique creative. While they help their clients to take their idea from inception to complete development. Graphic design, especially when it comes to web designing, is a two-way process that involves using materials driven from numerous sources. 

What are Source Files, You may ask?

When you hire a designer or a design company to create something for your brand such as a website, poster, brochure, or anything awesome- they do a great job to keep everyone happy. Clients receive digital copies of press files and final fines, but end up asking the same question every time! “Why won’t our designer share the graphic design source files? We paid for it, right?” well, NO. 

And no it’s not unprofessional or rude, here’s a simple explanation.

You are paying for the final product, not for the tools to create that. So, when you hire a professional web developer or designer to create or deliver an end product, you will receive a complete project such as a website, brochure, and advertisement. You need to understand that you don’t pay for the tools, research, sources, or layers that were used to create that asset. 

For example, if you visit a hardware store to buy tools, you pay for the drill and not for the manufacturing secrets. Or if you are getting your house painted, you pay the professionals to make your house look fabulous and not for the brushes, equipment or scaffolding.

With that being said, we hope you are comprehending the reason why designers don’t share source files with you. There are third parties involved in many ways that you may not be aware of.  

Designers have Licensed Items that are Paid for by them:

The most common tools used are the fonts and typefaces, this could entail items like photographs, icons, plug-ins, graphics, and web scripts that work and software that comes with a different set of license fees and rules. Graphic designers spend their money purchasing licenses to use different typefaces. Since these tools are the property of their respective creators, it is absolutely rude to ask for access. Also, legally, designers are not permitted to release such tools as they are not copyright holders.
