We have been talking about a digital world for a long time now and suddenly that is our way life today. Digital is how we actualize all our intents and purposes in a modern economy today. We all are now dependent on our phones and the internet more than ever. Right from news to knowledge to basic needs, we all are cocooned into a safe place and still making it work. With economy falling and horror stories coming from the stock exchange, many brands are thinking of suspending their online marketing now. Is this the time to step back? We say NO. Introverts might like the shutdown, but extroverts need their social time. Successful brands are changing their customer acquisition behavior in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are capturing the massive surge in online activities to make the best use of it. Social distancing is the order of the day and with major online buying, retail is seeing a massive 34% growth. Let us make use of this time to maintain what we have established. In the past, we have put in some significant efforts in maintaining a relationship with our customers. The connection with the target audience is not achieved overnight. It is absolutely crucial to continue that connection with them. The trust in your brand, the followers and engagement that has already been there, this is not the time to lose it. Any credibility lost now will be very difficult to get back as your client base needs consistency now more than ever. Do not disappoint them. This is the time to re-establish as a brand they can trust even in the most difficult times. Let us choose not to be fair-weather friends and deliver exceptional customer connections.
It was Social Media that was responsible for populating the news that Corona Virus was developed in a secret government lab of China. It didn’t end there, there was news of fake medicines: liquids, gels and powders that protected you from the virus.
There was also news about countries and celebs. News about Bill gates behind the virus, Taiwan covering the actual number of deaths, Italians marching on the streets and blaming China for bringing the virus to their country. None of the above were found to be true.
If nothing else, this at least proves that Social Media has a huge responsibility: The responsibility of spreading the truth. For a country that follows the principles of MK. Gandhi on truth and non-violence, while non-violence is needed in real life, truth is essential for Social Media.
The three monkeys – Don’t Write Fake News | Don’t Read Fake News | Don’t Share Fake News should be the new principles to follow in the modern-day world. One thing that is spreading faster than Corona Virus is fake news about it.

President Trump recently compared Corona Virus to a normal flu, mentioning that more people fall sick and die of Flu than from Corona Virus. This comparison is unfair given that normal flu has never impacted the economy / travel this much, we need to treat the situation with the panic it has created. What we are witnessing is a panic created by people, for the people. India has more people that die of Dengue every year and no masks can prevent you from a mosquito bite.
The panic is real, so is the situation. India has already cancelled all tourist visas – For a state like Kerala that survives on tourism, this is no less than the flood they witnessed in 2018.
As much as we might feel relieved by shutting doors to tourism, we still need to work hard to ensure that creating panic is not a solution to Corona virus.

In a few days, we are about to end an amazing year, yet another year when Social Media continues to play an increasingly important role in Modern Day World.
It is often alleged that Social media tends to drain joy, by fueling anxieties about the “better” lives that others seem to be leading online and by snatching time we should be spending interacting with others in the real world.
Here are my two cents on this topic.
#Happiness is within you, not on Social Media or inside your phone: Consider this to be a new era. As much as it is important to be present outside (on social media and phone) it is equally important to be present within yourself to achieve a state of happiness that cannot be shaken by anything you see online. Waking up and knowing that as long as you are alive, your eternal happiness belongs to you and no one has the right to take it away from you. When your inner voice feels “I am jealous” replace it with an equal and opposite positive thought “I am inspired”.
# If not Social Media, it’d be something else: Technology came as a landline in our lives back in the 80s, it evolved to become a car phone, a handphone, a cordless, a pager, a mobile, a computer, a laptop. Notice the change. Notice that it has a parallel path of evolution as humans. Be the ones to embrace the change to keep up with the changing times. Just know that this needs a better you to keep up to it.
# If we are absorbing more, we need to cleanse more: Other than envy, Social Media is also behind the circulation of a lot of other sad stories people must somehow absorb, and some part of it stays with you. I am not sure if you have seen an increasing trend in meditation, and people who are inclined towards spirituality. This trend is owed to the fact that we do need a way to detoxify. Meditation creates a break between your chain of thoughts by silencing your internal ‘meaning-making machine’ that’s busy in constant ‘analysis paralysis’.
# Focus on the bright side: Without this enhancement in technology, it would have been extremely difficult for someone like me to echo my thoughts this effectively right now. The words I am so easily able to communicate and make you read even though we are miles apart. This would have been no less than a miracle back in the old times. You and I are part of this ever-changing life.
Let’s live in the NOW, where Social Media is just a tool to make us more effective us, and just like any tool it has its own good and bad…no one has to tell you what to use a knife for.
